Ear wax appointment or hearing check?

The right starting point depends on what needs to be assessed. You do not have to diagnose the problem yourself.

Understanding the options · 3 November 2026

01

Different appointments, different questions

A wax appointment begins by checking the ears and whether removal is appropriate. A hearing check considers hearing more broadly. A blocked feeling does not prove that wax is the cause.

02

Describe the change to a clinician

If you are finding conversations difficult to follow, arrange appropriate clinical advice. A GP can advise about hearing problems, and hearing tests may also be available through pharmacies and opticians.

03

When a routine request is not enough

The NHS advises an urgent GP appointment or NHS 111 for sudden hearing loss, hearing that worsens over days or weeks, or hearing loss with earache or discharge. Do not use this demo form for urgent help.

Use trusted clinical guidance.
